Ovulation induction is a medical treatment used to stimulate the ovaries to produce and release mature eggs (ovulation). It is commonly employed for women who experience irregular ovulation or who do not ovulate at all, a condition known as anovulation. Ovulation induction is often a part of fertility treatment protocols for couples struggling with infertility.
The aim is to improve the chances of conception by encouraging the growth and release of healthy eggs, ensuring an egg is present during insemination.
When & How is Ovulation Induction Performed?
Ovulation induction is commonly used in the treatment of various fertility issues, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and unexplained infertility.
The process typically involves the administration of medications, such as oral medications like clomiphene citrate or letrozole, or injectable hormones like follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) or human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG). These medications work by stimulating the follicles in the ovaries to grow and develop, eventually leading to the release of mature eggs.
Throughout the ovulation induction process, monitoring is crucial. This involves regular ultrasounds to track the growth and development of follicles within the ovaries. Blood tests may also be conducted to measure hormone levels, helping to determine the optimal time for ovulation and timing of intercourse or other fertility treatments, such as (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
